Restaurants

Johannesburg (and South Africa in general) is littered with superb dining options. EliteRooms favourites for Jo’Burg are as follows:

Wombles

Great steak, top service and an ambience to match; if this sounds like your idea of a good restaurant then this is the place for you. To be fair to them they have plenty of other first-class food other than steak, including pasta and vegetarian options. It’s not the cheapest restaurant by Johannesburg standards, between €5 – €6 (60 RND approx) for starters and about €12 (130 RND approx) for a fillet steak, but still cheap by international city standards.

Moyo

Serious African charm coupled with an innovative food and wine menu makes Moyo a great choice for a meal out. This is a chain of restaurants but don’t let that put you off. Our favourite is the Melrose Arch restaurant. Average price for a main is approx  €15 (150 RND)

Bars

An excellent area for bars is in Sandton around the Nelson Mandela Square. This is an Italian-style square with a large statue of the man himself surrounded by trees and sparkling lights. A very happening place to hang out.

Another area worth considering is the Melrose Arch area, ironically our favourite in this area is the Melrose Arch Hotel with its leather armchairs, stylish dark wood bar and modern African décor.

Finally, another bar worth a look is Katzy’s. This is a very popular bar which offers fat sofas, chunky bricks, soft blues music and a top-of-the-range selection of cigars, cognacs and whiskies. It is located in the affluent area of Rosebank and is worth a visit.

Top Places to stay in Johannesburg

The city of Johannesburg started out as a mere gold rush settlement but has today transformed itself into a vibrant, pulsating city that is now the economic powerhouse of Africa and the largest urban area in South Africa. And it’s just as well because the vast reserves of gold (40% of all of the world’s gold) ran out back in the 1970s!

It’s a modern town with outstanding shopping by most international city standards, but being more of a financial centre it doesn’t have quite as many attractions for tourists as other cities like Cape Town. Some of the places of interest in Johannesburg are the new Museum Africa which gives an truthful and self-critical look at the nation’s sometimes troubled history and the Market Theatre Complex which houses both theatres and an interesting flea market every Saturday.

The following are our top hotels in Johannesburg:

Radisson Blu Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg – this is a great value hotel in one of the best areas of the city. My personal choice.

Saxon Boutique Hotel & Spa - Set on a private 6 acres of land, this hotel offers ultimate privacy and pampering. Pricey but worth it if you fancy treating yourself!

Hyatt Regency Johannesburg - Located in the renowned shopping district of Rosebank, this excellent hotel offers 5 star luxury at competitive rates. Great restaurant and bar make this hotel a noteworthy option
